If your company is responsible for collecting sales tax for products billed to a customer within a state where you have a facility or presence, you can use the sales tax option to compute and bill taxes for the catalog as a whole. You will be allowed to check off any number of states and enter the percent of tax to be computed. You may also override taxes for a given product in the Add New Item or Edit/View Items options (click here for help). If you have customers who are tax-exempt they may be identified on a per client basis. If you have set up an International Store Builder with a foreign currency, you will have the ability to add VAT (Value Added Tax) for the European Community countries.
You will also be able to designate whether taxes apply to Shipping and/or Handling Charges by state.
Applicable taxes will be identified on the order verification screen that your customers see before they submit their order. In cases where taxes are calculated on Shipping and you are using a carrier(s) and offering multiple shipping options, they will need to select their carrier and option before taxes are calculated. A message, "Total tax will be applied after shipping calculation" will be displayed on the Verification Page.

Taxes will also be displayed on the Order Slip used to view orders and will be passed in the ASCII flat file to any internal/external system.

To set up taxing capability for your catalog, click on the Catalog Taxes option in the Admin portion of your cart.
The entry screen is set up with a check off box that you can click for each state where you must bill sales tax. There is also a field for you to enter the percent tax that must be applied to the catalog in general. If the tax is 5%, all you need to enter is 5, DO NOT ENTER AS .05, if it is 6 1/2%, then the entry is 6.5. You can enter as many states as needed and then click the Update button.
To include tax calculations on Shipping and/or Handling, check the box for the appropriate state for Shipping and/or Handling.

The system will calculate the percent tax entered when there is a match between the end customer's billing state and any state where there has been an entry made for taxes. Taxes will be calculated on Shipping and Handling in those states where the checkbox is used.
If you are set up as an International Store Builder, you will have a separate screen for entering VAT (Value Added Tax) for the European Community countries. Entry for the % tax is the same as for the United States. If you must charge for each European Country, enter the tax rate in each country field that you will serve.

If this is the initial setup for your store builder, then go to the Catalog Settings option.
